Marc Anthony couldn’t resist but propose to Lopez seconds after meeting

LONDON - Singer-actor Marc Anthony has claimed that he asked his singer-actress wife Jennifer Lopez to marry him within seconds of meeting her. The 40-year-old singer who has 17-month-old twins Max and Emme with Lopez, married her in 2004 and was convinced he would spend the rest of his life with the brunette beauty when they first met in the 1990s, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
“She came to see me backstage at a theatre. As soon as she walked through the door I don’t know what hit me. But I probably said the worst thing. I said, ‘You’re my wife and you don’t even know it,’ and she was like, ‘Excuse me? Well that’s intense.’ I had no idea where that came from. But she was very cute and now she gets it! She’s my girl,” said Anthony.
The couple briefly dated after their first meeting, but both went on to marry other people before they reunited.

Salman Khan is Dabang- Sohail Khan

While the Khan Brothers are all set to release their next Kisaan, Sohail Khan is looking forward to his next co-production Main Aur Mrs Khanna and Arbaaz Khan is all set for his first production Dabang. Both the films have Salman in the lead. While Main Aur Mrs Khanna will see Salman in a soft romantic role opposite Kareena Kapoor, Dabang will show Salman Khan as a fearless cop. Incidentally, both the films are being directed by debutant directors. While Main Aur Mrs Khanna is being directed by Prem Soni; Dabang is being directed by Abhinav Kashyap.
Dabang which means a fearless cop is an apt title for my brother, says brother Sohail Khan. “The film will see Sohail in a very loud character. He plays a corrupt police officer based in the north, and he will mouth very heavy dialogue. For the first time he will play a negative role. This image is in total contrast to his role in Garv” says Sohail.
But then Sohail defends his brother and says, “Salman’s fearlessness comes from his confidence in his life. Salman bhai is a very honest man and when he says he has messed up he owns it up. His personality comes across. He’s too transparent. He will be seen in my next film Main Aur Mrs Khanna where he is very soft. Salman bhai has a romantic role here. You have to have faith in him when he works for you. He has been here in the industry for the last 18 years and he has a certain pattern of working. He loves to go to the gym, do his cycling and then begins work for the day. That’s Salman bhai” he concludes.

Katrina Kaif Too Busy for Govinda

Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif is too busy for her one time co-star, the old schooler Govinda. Katrina Kaif has turned down a cameo role in the film, "Life Partner." The film stars Fardeen Khan, Genelia D'Souza, Tusshar Kapoor and Prachi Desai and tells a story of contemporary couples. Katrina was asked to do a cameo appearance opposite Govinda who is the only actor in the film without a heroine opposite him.
It seems like director Rumi Jaffrey jumped the gun and expected Katrina to take on the role since she had played a full fledged romantic role opposite Govinda in " Life Partner," and thought she would be excited to do the cameo. But alas, Katrina said she just doesn't have any time to spare for the appearance.
It wasn't a film that she was busy with. She is in London for her birthday and family reunion. The whole family is going to take a vacation together soon after. The director says they couldn't wait for Katrina because that would mean they'd have to delay the wrap up shoot since most of the movie has already been shot.
The producers Abbas-Mastan want to release the film in August without delay, so Katrina was no longer considered for the part. Instead they have gotten Amrita Rao for the film, who has been getting a lot of attention for her new sexy look.
Katrina Kaif might've wanted a new beat, considering Govinda has been around the business and then some. Still a young actress, and definitely a hot one, Govinda could be old news to her.

Journalism

Journalism is the craft of conveying news, descriptive material and comment via a widening spectrum of media. These include newspapers, magazines, radio and television, the internet and even, more recently, the cellphone. Journalists—be they writers, editors or photographers; broadcast presenters or producers—serve as the chief purveyors of information and opinion in contemporary mass society: "News is what the consensus of journalists determines it to be." [1]
From informal beginnings in the Europe of the 18th century, stimulated by the arrival of mechanized printing—in due course by mass production and in the 20th century by electronic communications technology—today's engines of journalistic enterprise include large corporations with global reach.
The formal status of journalism has varied historically and, still varies vastly, from country to country. The modern state and hierarchical power structures in general have tended to see the unrestricted flow of information as a potential threat, and inimical to their own proper function. Hitler described the Press as a "machine for mass instruction," ideally, a "kind of school for adults." [2] Journalism at its most vigorous, by contrast, tends to be propelled by the implications at least of the attitude epitomized by the Australian journalist John Pilger: "Secretive power loathes journalists who do their job, who push back screens, peer behind façades, lift rocks. Opprobrium from on high is their badge of honour."
Censorship, governmental restriction or even active repression of individual journalists and non-state organs of communication continue to cause, at best, intermittent friction in most countries. Few formal democracies and no authoritarian governments make provision for protection of press freedom implied by the term Fourth Estate. [3]
The rapid rise of Internet technology, in particular the advent of blogging and social networking software, further destabilize journalism as traditionally understood and its practitioners as a distinct professional category. Combined with the increasing leakage of advertising revenue from pre-existing journalistic media into the internet, the full impact of the arrival of the citizen journalist—potentially positive (proliferation having thus far proved more difficult to police) as well as negative—is yet to be seen.

The Advantages of Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing has come a long way in the past few years. Social media marketing companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have become so expansive that they attract visitors in the millions. It is estimated that visitors watch over 100 million YouTube videos per day. There are more than 30 million active Facebook users, and over 19 million visitors to Twitter. So what exactly is “social media marketing”, and what are some of its advantages?
Simply put, social media marketing is a “rendezvous” of multiple online communities, with one goal in mind: to generate exposure. This about it. There are millions of people interacting in these online communities, sharing ideas and opportunities, providing the perfect atmosphere for larger corporations to increase their exposure and attract prospective customers, ultimately perpetuating a cycle of increasing revenue.
By allowing supporters of a company the authority to promote their products, an individual is provided compensation for advertising and promoting a product, through various online mediums. Here’s how it happens: someone works as a representative of a company. As a representative, he/she will get paid a fixed rate of X for going onto online forums and interacting with other individuals on messageboards, promoting a certain product.
As a result, whoever is a part of that particular online community will get exposure to the company and its products, and they may become a customer. If they do, they may recommend the brand to friends and family. If they do not, they may recommend the brand anyway – the point is, the company is getting exposure, from people, to people. When was the last time you saw a commercial for a product that you suspected was “too good to be true.” You probably did not pay any attention to it, and flipped the channel. What if that same product was advertised on an online forum or blog, by someone who has used the product, and SWORE by it?
People are more impressionable when they get a firsthand opinion from someone who does not stand to directly benefit.
Many online sales reps aren’t paid. Those “unofficial” reps are still very much heard, and they are much more numerous. This is just one example of social media marketing, but it clearly illustrates its advantages: low costs and higher yields, greater exposure to further establish a company and distinguish it amongst others, and generating overall publicity at the cellular level, so to speak.

Independent stations and cable offer new opportunities to pinpoint local audiences.
Very much an image-building medium.

Most ads are ten or thirty seconds long, which limits the amount of information you can communicate.
Direct Mail

Gina Jeffreys

One of Australia‘s most awarded female singers, Gina Jeffreys‘ remarkable career has not only taken her to the top of the country music industry — where she still reigns supreme — but continued to bring new surprises and successes for this talented and vivacious woman. After releasing her first single Slipping Away through BMG Music, Gina signed a record deal with ABC Music, and released her first single for the label Two Stars Fell in 1993. The song went straight to No.1 and the career of Gina Jeffreys was launched. The album The Flame went platinum, and the following January Gina won her first Golden Guitar for Female Vocalist of the Year.
During her time with ABC Country, Gina has enjoyed a dream run. She released five albums, each one rocketing to the top of the Country charts, and along the way gathered an impressive collection of four Golden Guitars, four MO Awards for live performance, an APRA Award, two Victorian Country Music Awards and CMT Video of the Year for Dancin’ With Elvis. Gina’s albums — The Flame, Up Close, Somebody’s Daughter, Christmas Wish and Angel — have all been smash hits with her loyal band of fans, collecting a steady stream of Gold and Platinum awards. Gina has also been one of the most in-demand performers in Australia, both live and on television, appearing at everything from civic receptions to Carols by Candlelight, a string of corporate functions and, of course, all the major country music festivals Australia-wide. International highlights have included performing at Fan Fair in Nashville, on a New Year’s Eve Television Special in Shanghai, China, to over 2 billion people, and the Tour of Duty Concert in East Timor.
Gina‘s tours are always sell-out successes, with the fans seemingly unable to get enough of Gina’s performances. And Gina is the first to admit she leads a charmed life — performing the music she loves, and sharing the experience with the love of her life, husband Rod McCormack.
But magic doesn’t just happen by itself — Gina has worked incredibly hard over the past decade to develop her career, and continues to emerge with fresh new sounds and stunning new looks to delight her fans and win over new supporters for her music. And as the hard-working patron of the Australian Leukaemia Foundation, she and Rod have quietly been helping sick children for several years now. As a new era — and the new role of motherhood — unfolded for Gina Jeffreys, the remarkable achievements of this talented woman were brought together on a must-have album for her fans: The Best of Gina Jeffreys … So Far.
Gina and Rod are the proud parents of baby Jackson and while Gina has been taking some time out of the limelight to enjoy her new role and to settle into a new house on the NSW Central Coast. Gina made her long-awaited return to big-stage festival performing with appearances at some of the major festivals during 2004.
Gina released "Somebody‘s Daughter", which was recorded in the United States with Gina‘s long time producer Garth Porter in June 2005. The album reinforces Gina‘s country roots with the first single "Dancing With Elvis", yet still highlights her exceptional talent with ballads on tracks such as "Have We Forgotten What Love Is?", the duet with Nashville recording artist Billy Dean.

CDGK to bring 50 CNG buses on the roads today

Karachi City District Government Karachi (CDGK) is all set to launch 50 environment-friendly CNG buses by today (July 27) as all necessary steps have been taken in this regard. Hino of Japan has already delivered 25 buses to CDGK which are now parked at the designated bus terminal at Surjani Town and Korean company Daewoo has started delivering the 25 buses out of which 15 have already been received and the remaining 10 will be delivered before the launching ceremony. Earlier these buses were scheduled to be launched by the first week of this month. However, due to delay in getting the delivery of 25 buses from Daewoo, the project was delayed. The city government got the delivery of 25 buses of Hino on June 30.The District Officer, Public Transport Management Operation and Regulation, Muhammad Athar informed The News that two routes for these buses have been planned. One, he said, would be from Surjani Town to Merewether Tower and the other from Surjani to Korangi. He said that the services of these CNG buses would also be made operational one of which would start from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Surjani Town and other one would ply from Surjani Town to Liaquatabad No.10.He said that the two routes would have 100 designated bus stops. This pilot project is directly financed by the city government through its own resources. According to the city government department concerned, the cost of the 50 CNG is Rs218 million. Each of these buses would have a capacity for 80 passengers, 44 seated and the remaining standing. Athar informed The News that depending on the availability of funds every year more buses may be inducted in the fleet. “In my opinion, a minimum of 100 CNG buses would be added every year if funds are available,” he said.He said that the city government has also appointed five CNG stations for these buses. “The operators of the buses would have nothing to do with money collection as the e-ticketing has also been outsourced,” he added.
Pak steps up anti-terror action as never before: Clinton

WASHINGTON: The Taliban is under "tremendous pressure" in Afghanistan, where US forces have stepped up their war as Washington touts a new strategy to root out extremism, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday. "The Taliban, which is, as I believe strongly, part of a kind of terrorist syndicate with Al-Qaeda at the center, is now under tremendous pressure, and I think that's in America's national interest," Clinton said on a US-based news channel program. In addition to boosting the US military presence in the war-ravaged nation, Clinton said that, "importantly, we've seen the Pakistani government and military really step up, which had not happened to the extent it has now."
Clinton cited the "permeable" border between Pakistan and Afghanistan as facilitating the clandestine movements of extremist cells in the region where Washington and its allies believe Al-Qaeda operates terrorism training camps.
The top US diplomat said that six months into the administration of President Barack Obama, and after a comprehensive review of US strategy in Afghanistan, Washington determined that "in order to really go after Al-Qaeda to uproot it and to destroy it, we had to take on those who were giving the Al-Qaeda leadership safe haven." Describing the approach as a "new strategy," Clinton said that in order for US military intervention to be effective, they have committed to helping empower local Afghan communities to defend themselves once the areas were cleared of extremists. "It's just beginning.
I think the president believes that it was not only the right strategy, but facing what he faced, to withdraw our presence or to keep it on the low-level, limited effectiveness that had been demonstrated would have sent a message to Al-Qaeda and their allies that the United States was willing to leave the field to them." Taliban-linked violence has risen dramatically this year in Afghanistan.
A wave of attacks across the country over the weekend killed 22 people including insurgents, a foreign soldier and two Afghan troops. Clashes and attacks have surged this month ahead of presidential elections in August, with NATO-led offensives in the south leading to record foreign military casualties and the Taliban insurgency at its fiercest since the 2001 US-led invasion toppled their government. On Sunday a running mate of President Hamid Karzai escaped unscathed after a gun and rocket attack hit his convoy in northern Afghanistan. Dozens of vehicles accompanying vice-presidential candidate Mohammed Qasim Fahim were driving through Kunduz province, which has seen soaring Taliban-linked attacks, when gunmen ambushed the convoy.
Osama’s tape bid to distract from Obama speech: White House

RIYADH: The White House said Wednesday that Al-Qaeda was trying to distract the Muslim world from President Barack Obama's "historic" outreach effort, with the release of a new Osama bin Laden tape.White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration has not yet had the opportunity to review the audio tape by the Al-Qaeda leader, aired on the Al-Jazeera satellite network. But he said it appeared to be consistent with messages in the past in which Al-Qaeda has threatened the United States and other countries.Gibbs said he didn't think it was "surprising" that Al-Qaeda would want to shift attention away from the president's "historic efforts" to have an open dialogue with the Muslim world. The tape was issued as Obama flew into Saudi Arabia at the start of his debut Middle East mission designed to kick-start the Middle East peace process and build bridges to the Muslim world with a speech on Thursday in Egypt.

Oil prices fall after spike above 70 dollars

NEW YORK: Oil prices retreated Friday after a brief spike that pushed New York crude above 70 dollars per barrel for the first time in seven months, before the market settled back on a US dollar rebound. New York's main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July closed at 68.44 dollars, down 34 cents, after a jump to 70.32 dollars a barrel, the highest level since November 4. Brent North Sea crude for July delivery fell 37 cents to 68.34 dollars a barrel in London, having spiked as high as 69.91 dollars. Analysts said that a surprise rise in the US dollar after a mostly positive American jobs report dragged down oil prices. The dollar, often regarded as a safe haven in times of economic turmoil, has been dropping on data showing signs of economic recovery. John Kilduff of MF Global said the market had to cope with "a very strong rally of the dollar which should have engendered losses for crude oil," but that reaction was muddled by a mixed report on US employment. Kilduff said that after 70 dollars was breached, "we've seen a terrific amount of profit taking."The US Labor Department said Friday the jobless rate surged to 9.4 percent in May, while the number of job losses slowed to a better-than-expected 345,000. The report, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, offered conflicting signals about a weak labor market, but suggested that the pace of massive job cuts is easing, a positive sign for a recession-battered economy. Oil prices have experienced a roller-coaster week in reaction to movements in the dollar, US inventory data and predictions made about crude futures. A struggling US currency makes dollar-priced crude cheaper for buyers holding stronger currencies, in turn stimulating demand and pushing up prices.

Time: “Taliban Advance: Is Pakistan Nearing Collapse?”

On Wednesday a local Taliban militia crossed from the Swat Valley — where a February cease-fire allowed the implementation of strict Islamic, or Shari’a, law — into the neighboring Buner district, which is just a few hours drive from Islamabad (65 miles, separated by a mountain range, as the crow flies). ((See pictures on the frontlines in the battle against the Taliban.)
Residents streaming from Buner, home to nearly a million people, told local newspapers that armed militants are patrolling the streets. Pakistani television stations aired footage of Taliban soldiers looting government offices and capturing vehicles belonging to aid organizations and development projects. The police, say residents, are nowhere to be seen. The shrine of a local Muslim saint, venerated across the country, was closed. The Taliban, which adheres to a stricter version of Islam than is practiced in most of Pakistan, hold that worship at such shrines goes against the teachings of Islam.
Meanwhile courts throughout the Malakand division, of which Swat and Buner are a part, have closed in deference to the new agreement calling for the implementation Shari’a, law. “If the Taliban continue to move at this pace they will soon be knocking at the doors of Islamabad,” Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of one of the country’s Islamic political parties, warned in Parliament Wednesday. Rehman said the Margalla Hills, a small mountain range north of the capital that separates it from Buner, appears to be “the only hurdle in their march toward the federal capital,” The only solution, he said, was for the entire nation to accept Shari’a law in order to deprive the Taliban of their principal cause.
The fall of Buner is raising international alarm. Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton characterized the situation was a danger to Pakistan, the U.S. and the world. “We cannot underscore the seriousness of the existential threat posed to the state of Pakistan by continuing advances, now within hours of Islamabad, that are being made by a loosely confederated group of terrorists and others who are seeking the overthrow of the Pakistani state,” Clinton said. She also accused Pakistan’s leaders of “basically abdicating to the Taliban and the extremists” by signing the cease-fire agreement. (Read “Will Pakistan Toughen Up on the Taliban?”)

Is this the Islamic version of The Wild One ? The Marlon Brando movie from 1953, is a story about wilding youth that take over a small american town. Sure seems that way.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Taliban have advanced deeper into Pakistan by engineering a class revolt that exploits profound fissures between a small group of wealthy landlords and their landless tenants, according to government officials and analysts here. The strategy cleared a path to power for the Taliban in the Swat Valley, where the government allowed Islamic law to be imposed this week, and it carries broad dangers for the rest of Pakistan, particularly the militants’ main goal, the populous heartland of Punjab Province.

The Mrs. Mottola Nobody Knows

Mariah’s successor may be the "Queen of Latin Pop," but will her new husband help her "crossover" to MTV?
By Ed Grant(First published in time.com and used with the written permission of the author and publication of first instance)
Sure, Madonna got married. So what? Hardcore media junkies like myself have grown weary of her constant struggle to struggle to devise new identities, and her highly publicized wedding to filmmaker Guy Ritchie was such a tired fait accompli — "the Material Girl finally goes domestic!" — that it’d be fair to say it produced no broken hearts among male pop fans. On December 2, 2000, however, I’m a proud enough fanboy to admit that I felt a slight twinge of envy when Latin music megastar Thalía, 28, tied the knot with music mogul and Mariah-molder Tommy Mottola, 52, in a $3 million dollar wedding ceremony at NYC’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Though a superstar in her native Mexico and many other countries from Greece to the Philippines, Thalía is only known in the U.S. to one large section of the populace, namely those who follow Latin pop music (you know, the kind MTV refuses to air at any time — the kind in Spanish), and regularly watch the telenovelas seen on the three Spanish-language networks. Thalía’s fans as a whole have been politely avoiding the somewhat Faustian aspect of her romantic merger with Mottola, but the tabloids, both in English and Spanish, haven’t been quite so kind. She’s been portrayed in English publications as a young Latin soap star positioning herself to be "Mariah II," while Spanish publications have printed as many pictures as they could obtain of her publicly nuzzling her older beau — elaborating how much money and influence Mottola has. The conclusions were implicit: Mottola chose another gorgeous younger woman, but this time he picked a foreign one to avoid the sort of problems he had with Carey (who conducted bitter public arguments with her "starmaking" hubby); Thalía, having already noted in many interviews that she was "too busy" to sustain a relationship at this stage of her career, suddenly found her "twin" in a man whose wiseguy-wannabe wardrobe earmarks him as a conspicuous consumer (he constructed a $10 million mansion for Carey, in which he installed a fully functional recording studio). It’s enough to make a fan like myself shrug, sigh, and simply try to forget it all by remembering the intial thrill of discovery....
Diehard channel surfers rendered catatonic by the pabulum served up by the networks and basic cable channels have always known that the most vibrant, unpredictable entertainment can be found on the foreign language channels, particularly the three Spanish networks. Those of us who studied the language in school but get lost when people begin to hablan rapidamente (talk quickly) can still follow and become absorbed by Spanish-language telenovelas, variety shows, and music programs.

Fans of vintage movies and TV shows will find formulas they recognize, but the passion and spontaneity with which they are carried out makes one thing certain: the most routine program on Univision is a thousand times more compelling than the sad fare being offered up on Nick at Night these days (when Facts of Life becomes "classic TV," it’s time to fold up shop, fellas).
I first encountered Thalía (pronounced Tah-LEE-ah) on La Movida, a late-evening talk/variety program. About 20 at the time (1992), Thalía was already a show-biz veteran (she started in her first prefab band at the tender age of nine), Her look was what struck home first — a lithe, energetic brunette with a white streak running through the front of her mane-like hair, clad in a series of outlandish, eye-catching outfits. Her songs were the next aspect to register — an assortment of well-crafted pop tunes, with clearly salacious overtones. The coup de grace were the interview segments, in which the sexpot singer talked quietly and sweetly about her career, her fans, and her-then controversial image.

The fact that the show appeared to have a minimal budget, the choreography was slightly off at points, and the sound quality on the live musical performances abysmal, made the experience all the more charming. Thalía’s one number in English was a heavily accented version of "Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend," done in full Marilyn regalia — here, it seemed, was a young woman truly unafraid of comparisons with the then-still-vital Madonna.
ALONG CAME POLLY

The affable combination of Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston made this by-the-numbers screwball comedy a big hit in theaters. The movie is forgettable fluff directed by the co-scripter of Meet the Parents and Zoolander, but it does have the distinction of trying to unite two very different schools of comedy: Woody Allen's urban tales of neurotic romance and the Farrelly Brothers' winsome gross-out farces. Stiller is put through his paces as he participates in gags involving a revoltingly sweaty basketball opponent, irritable bowel syndrome, premature ejaculation and an overflowing toilet. After There's Something About Mary, it's no surprise to see Stiller slogging through such scenes, but it is amusing to hear his thoughts about them in Herzog Production' featurette included on this disc. "Why am I doing this?," he says. "What deep psychological need do I have to be accepted? It's one step away from porn." All of Ben's most embarrassing moments are contained in the movie, but some choice bits by the supporting cast are unearthed in the outtakes and deleted scenes, including uncomfortably tacky revelations from Phillip Seymour Hoffman's washed-up Brat Packer; a delightfully dizzy white-girl rap performed by Debra Messing; and a funny outtake in which Alec Baldwin returns to his Glengarry Glen Ross character's bad manners in a men's room scene, much to Stiller's delight. One of the film's more absurd running jokes centers around Aniston's pet, a blind ferret. In order to show that no harm came to the little critter, the disposable supplement "Rodolfo Goes Hollywood" shows him getting the celebrity treatment as he attends the movie's Los Angeles premiere. The disc interestingly contains no extras produced by the E! Channel--this despite the fact that Hoffman's character shamelessly plugs the network's E! True Hollywood Story numerous times throughout the course of the movie.

FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY: RECUT AND EXTENDED EDITION

Robert Rodriguez takes pride in depicting himself on the DVD releases of his films as a genial control freak. With Sin City, he ceded some of that control to his co-director Frank Miller, the author of the Sin City graphic novels on which the movie is based. The first release of the film on DVD, which streeted in August, contained only one featurette. This edition, being a Rodriguez-supervised production, is bursting with extra materials. Rodriguez and Miller discuss the production on one audio commentary track; Rodriguez and "guest director" Quentin Tarantino (who helmed one sequence featuring Benicio Del Toro and Clive Owen) concentrate on the technical aspects on a second track. The film's uncanny faithfulness to Miller's stylishly noir visuals makes it only fitting that his is the voice that guides the viewer through this two-disc set's most intricate feature, "Sin-chroni-City," in which one can hear his reflections on each of the characters, locations and events in the picture. The package also includes two cuts of the film: the three lengthy story lines can be seen in their intertwined theatrical version on disc one and as separate shorter films on disc two. The latter versions of the stories include deleted scenes, which aren't spotlighted in any way. The single most valuable supplement is an installment of Rodriguez's "Flick School" concept, begun on the Spy Kids and Desperado DVDs. Here he runs through Sin City's production in a mere 15 minutes, discussing both the shoot, in which the cast performed against a green screen, and the complicated postproduction process, in which Miller's noir backgrounds and lighting were added digitally. Rodriguez's devotion to digital technology is shown to have paid off wonderfully in this instance, as a very cinematic style has been forged out of a collection of very playful computer gambits and "tricks."
CHICAGO: THE RAZZLE-DAZZLE EDITION

When this multiple Oscar-winner was first released on DVD, it contained a bare minimum of supplements: a commentary by director Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon, the deleted song "Class" and a 30-minute featurette. This two-disc special edition contains all of the featurettes, behind-the-scenes footage and archival clips that were clearly held back from the first release. The most egregious love-fest is "An Intimate Look at Director Rob Marshall," in which everyone from composers John Kander and Fred Ebb to the producers and the cast go overboard in praising the talented first-time director. Shorter and thankfully milder featurettes salute production designer John Myhre and costume designer Colleen Atwood, both Oscar winners for their work on the film. The most intriguing supplement centers around the month in which Liza Minnelli filled in for Gwen Verdon in the 1975 Broadway production, documented for posterity solely through a clip from the Dinah! daytime talk show. The purpose of this package is, of course, to extol the virtues of the film, and so we are treated to montages that blend rehearsal footage, on-set video and the finished performances. As excellent as the film is, theater buffs will find it hard not to enter a nostalgic haze with the featurette "From Stage to Screen," which focuses on the three leads from the original Broadway production: Verdon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach. In wonderful interview footage shot before his death last year, Orbach reminiscences about the show's peerless director, Bob Fosse. For her part, Rivera testifies to the brilliance of her co-stars. And the brief, Fosse-directed TV commercials seen here, along with a killer TV rendition of "Razzle Dazzle" by Orbach, bear her out. Orbach seconds Rivera's perspective on the movie when he declares, "I couldn't have been happier [with it]. Sure, I would've liked to play it, you know."
DOG DAY AFTERNOON SPECIAL EDITION

Hidden away at the end of the main featurette included in this two-disc special edition is the revelation that the film's assistant director, Burtt Harris, is responsible for Dog Day Afternoon's most famous line. Star Al Pacino maintains that "Burtt just whispered in my ear that I should call out 'Attica'" before Pacino was about to enact his character's media-galvanizing performance outside the bank where he is holding hostages. Thus was born a golden moment, out of a random suggestion and the power of improvisation. Improv is actually the major topic of the supplements here, as both the featurette and director Sidney Lumet's audio commentary delve into the three-week rehearsal Lumet conducted with his actors. He asked them to address each other by their real names, use their own street clothes as wardrobe and improvise dialog, some of which was integrated into the feature. It's a credit to Lumet's amiable working relations with his collaborators that screenwriter Frank Pierson, whose dialog was replaced in many instances by ad-libs, sings the praises of the rehearsal period. The featurette, which includes every key living crew member and all of the living male cast, also reveals that Pacino was responsible for a number of the film's finer points. Pacino urged Lumet to cast John Cazale, Charles Durning and even a young Lance Henriksen, and he advised Pierson that a scripted kiss with co-star Chris Sarandon would be better played as a dialog piece. Ubiquitous DVD docu-maker Laurent Bouzereau imparts a solid amount of interesting info in the one-hour featurette, but the audio commentary by Lumet is the set's most endearing extra. Diehard New Yorker Lumet offers not only wonderful insights into his technical approach but heartfelt reflections on how he wanted to carefully handle the lead character's homosexuality so that some loud-mouth "guy in the balcony of the Loews Pitkin in Brooklyn" would stifle his jeers and simply relate to the character'
NEW YORK DOLL

"From rock star to schlep on the bus" is the way Arthur Kane, the former bassist for the influential band New York Dolls, describes his life path in this alternately sad and inspirational documentary. When we first meet Kane, he's working as a buttoned-down clerk at a Mormon library in Los Angeles, wishing desperately for a Dolls reunion. This wish is granted when singer Morrissey asks the band to reunite for an event in the summer of 2004. The reunion is a smash, but Kane dies shortly thereafter. Filmmaker Whiteley, an acquaintance of Kane's through the Mormon Church, crafts a stirring portrait of an aging rocker who found solace in religion and dreamed of former glories. The sequences in which "Killer Kane" reunites with old band mates David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are heartbreaking in their simplicity, with the trio simply picking up where they left off nearly three decades before. The film becomes heavy handed when Whiteley implies that the power of prayer in Kane's life brought about Morrissey's decision. Those familiar with the Dolls' important punk/glam legacy will be able to overlook the religious message and respond solely to the music and Kane's brief, peculiar journey back into the limelight.

Media responsibility
Media responsibility is a term for the belief that mass media have a basic responsibility to help strengthen and support democratic processes.
Although this is a subjective concept, hard to define, arguments have been made for newspapers, television, radio, and perhaps types of Internet communication to act as a government watchdog, as a gatekeeper and instrument to disseminate necessary information, and more popularly, as a reflection of cultural interests and trends.
Because the news media typically amplifies popular backlash against unpopular groups during a moral panic, advocates of media responsibility also call for media outlets to refrain from sensationalizing related incidents. Otherwise, the resulting public outrage might manifest in ill-conceived legislation against a folk devil or in popular vigilantism against the persecuted.

A gutsy new DFID White Paper puts the politics back into development

The UK Department for International Development published its latest White Paper this week setting out its strategy for the next few years. Given DFID's reputation and clout throughout the international development system, it is likely to prove highly influential beyond a simple UK government department. I should declare an interest from the outset. The programme I run at the BBC World Service Trust, the Policy and Research Programme on Media and Communication in Development, is...[Read More]

Democracy and Governance: Emerging Paradigms in a Digital Age”.

The media are central institutions of the public sphere and therefore play a critical role in enhancing democratization and good governance. While democracy has generally been spreading across the world, we have seen countries where democracy is challenged and where the failure of governance has led to widespread poverty, hunger and deprivation.
The media can play a significant role in spreading awareness and empowering people while monitoring governments and corporations and holding them accountable. In recent years, the advent of the Internet and digital information and communication technologies have brought about a profound transformation in the way people communicate and share knowledge and information. These new technologies offer vast new opportunities for public participation and engagement and have the potential to expand the public sphere, deepen political participation and enhance good governance and democracy.
However, the media and new digital technologies can also present new challenges and be exploited to extend control and surveillance thus policy makers need to put in place the necessary mechanisms that can mitigate the harmful use of the media by extremists and special interest groups.
This conference will provide a critical space for both media professionals and academics to exchange knowledge and share their experiences on the role of the media in bringing about development and the new paradigms that are emerging in the digital age.
AMIC’s key event is the flagship annual conference, hosted in rotation by countries across the Asia-Pacific region. Recent annual conferences have been held in Manila, Philippines (2008), Singapore (2007), Penang, Malaysia (2006), Beijing, PR China (2005) and Bangkok, Thailand (2004).
The AMIC Annual Conference is a premier event on the Asian media calendar and attracts eminent international speakers and participants from the media industry and academia. Delegates to the conference come not only from the Asia-Pacific region, but also from Europe and the Americas as well. It features high-profile keynote addresses, plenary sessions, and several parallel sessions. Networking events, cultural programmes, media visits and even tourism events are also held in conjunction with the annual conference.

Media's role in society

Media plays a significant role in our society today. It is all around us, from the shows we watch on television, the music we listen to on the radio, to the books and magazines we read each day. Television more so that any of the other medias achieves a myriad of different goals. These goals range from entertaining to educating. Various confines of education and entertainment are depicted in television.
For the most part the television is found to be very entertaining. People watch television shows they enjoy and find entertaining. Television is often looked at as a babysitter for children. The viewing of television can entertain the young and old alike for great amounts of time. Along with entertaining, the media is used to inform society. Days are often started by the listening of the news on the morning television, judging the latest updates on the local traffic jams. Days are often concluded with the watching of the late night news on television, keeping us informed of the world and the events occurring around us. Steven Stark, author of Glued to the Set has been quoted as saying, "the local newscast has replaced the network news and the newspaper alike as the average American's main source of news." (390)

why english language is important to join media career?

English is the world’s leading international language. In different countries around the globe, English is acquired as the mother tongue, in others it is used as a second language. Some nations use English as their official language, performing the function of administration; in others it is used as an international language for business, commerce and industry.
What factors and forces have led to the spread of English which, only 400 years ago, was limited to a small number of speakers in a tiny part of the world? Why is English now considered to be so prestigious that, across the globe, individuals and societies feel disadvantaged if they do not have competence in this language? What has been the effect of the spread of English on indigenous languages, cultures and communities?
How has English changed through 1,500 years? These are some of the questions that you investigate when you study English language.
You also examine the immense variability of English and come to understand how it is used as a symbol of both individual identity and social affiliation. You develop in-depth knowledge of the intricate structure of the language. Why do some non-native speakers of English claim that it is a difficult language to learn, while infants born into English-speaking communities acquire their language before they learn to tie their shoelaces?
At Sussex, you are introduced to the nature and grammar of English in all its aspects. This involves the study of sound structures, the formation of words, the sequencing of words and the construction of meaning, as well as examination of the theories explaining these aspects of English usage. You are encouraged to develop your own individual responses to the practical and theoretical issues raised by studying how speakers and writers employ English for a wide variety of purposes.
